*Note: Yesterday, we confirmed our suspicions that we'd lost both hives. We won't know anything about causation for sure until we can do a full hive inspection (right now there's still a foot or more of snow around the hives and limited space to work), but for various reasons, we suspect the unrelenting cold this winter did them in. We've been hearing similar stories from friends in the area. We'll get more bees this spring (they're already ordered) and take it from there.
